About the Mahjong Tiles
In Japanese Mahjong, The Mahjong Flower and Season tiles are not used at all.
Here is a list of the 136 tiles used in the game: The Character tiles: ![]() From left to right : one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. There are total of 36 character tiles (4 times 9) They can be used to create Chii (sequence of three), Pon (three of a kind) and Kan (four of a kind). The Bamboo tiles: ![]() From left to right : one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. There are total of 36 Bamboo tiles (4 times 9) They can be used to create Chii (sequence of three), Pon (three of a kind) and Kan (four of a kind). The Circle tiles: ![]() From left to right : one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. There are total of 36 Circle tiles (4 times 9) They can be used to create Chii (sequence of three), Pon (three of a kind) and Kan (four of a kind). The Wind tiles: ![]() From left to right : East, South, West, North. There are 16 wind tiles (4 times 4) Note that the wind tiles can only create Pon (three of a kind) and Kan (four of a kind) and cannot be used in Chii (sequence of three) - for example, three East tiles are a Chii, but East, North and West are NOT a Pon. The Dragon tiles: ![]() From left to right : White, Green, Red. There are 12 dragon tiles (4 times 3) just like the wind tiles, the Dragon tiles can only create Pon (three of a kind) and Kan (four of a kind) and cannot be used in Chii (sequence of three) - for example, three Green tiles are a Chii, but Green, Red and White are NOT a Pon. |
